Casual Resident Support Worker
(8 hour shifts: day, evenings, nights)
First Nation Healing Centre is a non-profit organization which is presently seeking a Casual Resident Support Worker. The Casual Resident Support Worker is responsible to monitor resident activities and operations of the centre during their shift. The Casual R.S.W is expected to work with women (and her children where applicable) in a mutual effort to confront and overcome hardships that have contributed her to coming into the shelter. The Casual R.S.W will be a part of a team that provides supportive services designed to enable residents to achieve change and growth. Importantly, the R.S.W team is responsible for building a trusting relationship with women and children by always modelling positive behaviour as a professional service provider.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- To ultimately pick up shifts that our full time Resident Support Workers are off.
- Orients residents to house procedures, rules and policies. Helping residents adapt to the daily living routine including a clear explanation of the staff/centre roles and services.
- Complete and prepare intake forms accurately.
- Maintains an awareness of all resident’s current situation and circumstances, including their physical, emotional, mental and spiritual state, through communication and consultation with counselling staff at shift change and through direct contact immediately after shift change.
- On client admission, assess the immediate and medical needs of the resident and her children, and when necessary make referrals for medical services.
- To ensure that residents’ needs are communicated to the full time RSW and to ensure service plans are delivered.
- Provides competent care of the children’s physical and emotional needs in the mothers absence.
- To mend the 24/7 crisis line day, evening and night shifts
Provides Security to Persons and Property
- Monitors all visitors to the centre to ensure that no resident or staff is placed at risk
- In emergency situations (injury, violence, fire) contacts Executive Director and proper responders (RCMP, Fire Department)
- Has the ability to provide a sense of security and ensure safety measures are met
- Screens and assesses telephone calls by identifying and prioritizing presenting problems and make decisions according to the needs of the caller.
- If callers needs that are outside the centre mandate, RSW casual should be well versed in community resources to promptly make referrals to appropriate resources/supports
- To have efficient documentation/logging skills
- Adhere to centres policy and procedures manual
- Monitors activity in the shelter, check locked doors and windows
- Ensures the personal property of residents is kept safely and returned upon discharge
- To answer phones, fax, email and ensure efficient communication on behalf of the centre
- Reads daily log entries when coming into shift
- Ensure essential information is relayed between shift for the next shift worker
- Complete incident reports and monthly reports
- To ensure the centre is kept clean and tidy during shift
- Ensures residents are upkeeping with their chores
- Mentors residents by helping them cook and clean
- Counselling diploma is always an asset; relevant and sufficient experience in counselling
- Grade 12 Highschool Diploma
- ASIST is an asset, or experience in working with vulnerable or at risk people
- Awareness and understanding of issues pertaining to family violence and domestic abuse
- To be reliable and willing to take shifts where full time staff are unavailable
- To have good computer skills
- Clear understanding of confidentiality and working in an area that deals with sensitive information on a daily basis
- Good communication skills and that ability to handle difficult conversations
- Ability to carry out responsibilities with minimal supervision
- Valid driver’s license
- Must have good conflict resolution skills
- Ability to work under stressful situation and dealing with crisis calls
- Must submit a criminal record check, child abuse registry check and drug testing (as per the FRCN By-Law 2004-01, sec. 8.01)
- Willing to work evenings, weekends and night shifts.
